KKR performance analysis
KKR have had a pretty decent IPL 2017 winning 8 of the 13 matches played so far. In fact, KKR have won 6/8 matches chasing the target in this IPL. Kolkata have also had quite strong performances at Eden Gardens winning 4/6 matches there so far. KKR have put in some strong batting performances and 131 is their lowest score this season. They have scored an average of 168 runs while batting. KKR , on the other hand, have conceded an average of 163 runs to the opposition. Opening pair of Gambhir- Uthappa have been the key reason for KKR chasing down big targets. Gambhir has scored 433 runs in 13 matches with 4 half centuries while Uthappa has scored 384 runs in 11 matches with 5 half centuries. Sunil Narine opening the batting has proven to be a master stroke at strike rate of 158.
Strengths and Weakness Kolkata
KKR have had an impressive line up of pace bowlers with the likes of Nathan Coulter Nile, Chris Woakes and Umesh Yadav. KKR pace bowlers have had a mixed IPL with their top performance against RCB when they blew away the strong batting order for just 49 runs at Kolkata with pace and bounce. Apart from this performance, Chris Woakes and Umesh Yadav have picked up 17 and 13 wickets respectively but conceded more than 9 runs per over. KKR spinners who have been their strength in previous IPL have not had a great IPL 2017. Sunil Narine and Kuldeep Yadav had a mixed IPL considering Kolkata has been their home ground.
MI IPL performance analysis
MI have been the team to beat in this IPL 2017. They have lost only 4 matches so far and have been the best team in the tournament. Mumbai Indians have had strong batting performances scoring an average 170 runs. Mumbai Indians have successfully chased down totals in 7/9 matches where they have won. Against GL, MI managed to tie the match and held their nerves to win the only super over this IPL has witnessed. Not only Nitish Rana (333 runs) and Kieron Pollard (349 runs) have been the mainstays of the batting order but also Pollard’s power hitting has ensured a win for MI on a couple of occasions.
MI Strengths and Weakness
MI Skipper Rohit Sharma’s batting form has not been impressive at all this season. He has scored only 255 runs including 3 half centuries in 13 matches. MI bowling has been a bit of an issue with only McClenaghan (18) and Jasprit Bumrah (15) being amongst the wickets. Generally speaking, MI old timers like Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh have been disappointing and have not played all the games either. MI bowlers have conceded an average of 164 runs in 13 matches to the opposition teams. The economy rates of MI bowlers like Bumrah (7.66) and Malinga (9.50) have not been up to the mark. MI have not had the opportunity to win many matches batting first. Before the playoffs they will have to experiment batting first in the upcoming match to ensure they don’t falter in the crucial playoff matches.
MI have a huge advantage, generally speaking, against KKR in head to head games. This year alone, MI have won 2/2 games against KKR and overall KKR last defeated MI 2 years back in IPL 2015.
